Darren Criss takes it to the street: Watch now!

Thursday, April 21, 2011

"Glee" star Darren Criss may have shot to fame in record time this year, but he's still in touch with the struggling artist he used to be. As part of "On The Spot: Johnny Wright's Quest for the Next Supergroup," starmaker Johnny Wright is shaping young singers. This week, he's challenged them to an acoustic corner - and Criss decided to join them.

Yesterday (April 20), Criss donned his signature pink RayBans and brought his guitar to the Santa Monica Third Street Promenade, a walking mall where street performers are always welcome.

"One of the challenges Johnny's given [the contestants] is called an Acoustic Corner thing, where they try their luck at just going out and playing music, and that music happens to be my music," he says. He decided that he wanted "in on the fun."

He even gave onlookers a little taste of the Katy Perry cover that made him a "Glee" favorite: "Teenage Dream." He covered Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and Train's "Hey Soul Sister," plus introduced some of his own original material.

"It's great, because he's not acting like a star," said one fan. "He's always really great for his fans. He's really sweet."
