@rikerR5 Talks Warblers, Family Band @officialR5Wednesday, April 06, 2011
“It’s been absolutely amazing. I’m in shock. I had no idea the Warblers would get so big. I thought it would last one, maybe two episodes at most,” Lynch said. "I got a call from my agent. I get there and the script says you’re supposed to be at a prep school. I went to the audition in khakis and a blue button-up shirt. Eddy (Martin, who plays Thad) was in the room and he taught me the dance,” Lynch said. “I love all the songs,” Lynch prefaced. “‘Misery’ was a good song to perform. We got to do a little more dancing. ‘Animal’ was fun too. The whole cast is amazing. Ryan Murphy is a genius,” Lynch said.
“I’ve known Kevin McHale and Harry Shum Jr. for a while. I took hip-hop classes from Harry. I met Kevin at a dance studio. He was in NLT (McHale’s pre-’Glee’ band) and I was there listening. Lea Michele was one of the first girls I met. She’s super nice and actually really funny. She says really random things,” he added.
“We’re all so close,” Lynch said of his friendships with the other Warblers. But despite the brotherly bond, the Warblers haven’t started giving each other nicknames. “We don’t have nicknames for each other but (choreographer) Zach Woodlee gives them to us. Matt Hall is ‘Super Queen’, I don’t remember why. Nelson Beato is ‘Beyonce’ because when we were doing ‘Bills, Bills, Bills’ he was being Beyonce.”
Lynch says the challenge of working on “Glee” is : “waking up early. There’s a lot of work to do and most of us stay up late working on our other projects but it’s all great.”
Lynch’s other projects include performing with his band R5. “It’s a pop-rock family band. We’re all related except Ratliff (R5’s drummer) isn’t related by blood,” he explains. “All of our names start with the letter ‘R’ so that’s how we came up with the name. We get along really well,” he said of his relationships with his bandmates. “Rocky (Lynch’s younger brother) and I have been best friends for forever. We’re super, super close. I’m a big rock fan. I love The Beatles, Elvis, guitar driven music. I also love pop. When I was 8 or 9, I was a huge fan of the Backstreet Boys. I used to be able to dance their entire show. As I’ve gotten older, I appreciate The Beatles and classics more.”
However, Lynch is quick to name McFly as his favorite band. “My band is a really big McFly fan. McFly is a great definition of rock-pop,” he said. “I want to keep working on ‘Glee’ and there’s a lot of fun stuff coming up for R5. I’ll probably be writing some new songs. I was talking to Darren (Criss) about writing some songs together and he was stoked,” Lynch said.
After the last aired “Glee” episode, titled “Original Songs”, fans noticed that in one particular scene when Blaine was seeking the Warbler’s support to sing a duet with Kurt at the Regionals competition, Lynch’s character appeared especially enthusiastic. “There’s a little back story there,” Lynch said.
“Jeff really looks up to Blaine and Jeff has style like Kurt,” he says before adding with a laugh, “I’m just making this up. I thought it was awesome and Jeff was totally going to support it. I performed the scene with a big fat smile on my face,” he said. “There’s nothing wrong with it,” Lynch said of the romance between Kurt and Blaine. “You love who you love, it doesn’t matter.”
Lynch is also known for reaching out to his fans on social networking sites, particularly tumblr.com where Gleeks have been known to cause quite a commotion.“If I was a really big fan, I’d really like them to respond. I try to look it at that way,” Lynch said of his outreach to fans. “Everyone is so amazing. I love talking to everyone. I really haven’t gotten any weird stuff. I’ve had a couple people ask me to prom.”
“I think ‘Glee’ fans are awesome. I have never seen so many pictures of Darren and Chris kissing,” he added with a laugh.
