Chris Colfer and Harry Shum Jr. @ 2011 CNN Heroes: An All-Star TributeMonday, December 12, 2011
Chris Colfer was a part of Anderson Cooper & CNN’s Heroes All-Star Tribute in LA on Sunday. Chris presented the Young Wonders award to Mikey Caraway.
When you’re near death, it’s hard to think about anything but your own mortality. When you survive that kind of illness, it takes extraordinary grace to then put others first,” Colfer told the audience.
“This is compassion in it’s purest form, a quality all young wonders share, especially (Mikey) Caraway."
Caraway, 14, was diagnosed with liver failure in 2008 and was expected to pass away. On Oct. 31, 2008, a motorcycle accident resulted in the death of Johnny Hernandez, 18, and Hernandez’s liver was given to Caraway. For three years, Caraway has fed the homeless in Oakland, Calif. through his program “Mikey’s Meals.” There was very little to do to thank the Hernandez family, so Caraway decided to thank his community.
“A lot of times the name ‘hero’ is given to people who don’t deserve it. A hero is someone that thinks for others before themselves and goes off of that instinct and that drive and goes out and does something,” Colfer said.
